"Every year when parents start posting school pictures, my heart sinks. We have not had a school photo since grade 4. Kya is currently in grade 10. It always felt like one more thing we were missing out on.
And then last week, a bulletin from her homeschool division came out, that this was the year they were offering school photos.
I immediately reached out to the photographer and started a back-and-forth conversation. I cannot believe how wonderful and accommodating this woman was. She even offered to come in at night and shoot Kya’s photos if it would make it easier on her. I explained that Kya has her days and nights flipped, and it would be much better if we could do an earlier slot so she met us at 8:30am yesterday morning.
That simple act of kindness, allowing my daughter to come in early to accommodate her meant everything to me.
And on top of this, I ordered Kya a new shirt, which I absolutely did not think she would wear but she happily put it on in the morning. Huge win!
The photos were taken at a school I had never been to so we arrived a little early. It’s always a balance of not being too early and also not rushing. I could see her anxiety setting in and at one point she said no picture. I said we’re going to take a picture quickly and we will be all done. She didn’t protest. She got out of the car and paced around a little, but she did it while watching the kids arrive for school. She was happily stimming and enjoyed watching them.
Once the photographer arrived, my daughter turned into model mode. lol she put her hands on her hip and started smiling and grinning from ear to ear.
And last night to my surprise, the photographer emailed me the proofs. I think she knew I was excited to see them!
Every single day I am proud of this kid and every single day she shows me how truly resilient she is.
